Heading off on holiday or a work trip? Here is what you need to know about taking a disposable vape through airport security and onto a European flight, in plain language and without the guesswork.
Key takeaways
- Vapes go in hand luggage or your pocket, never in checked bags.
- No vaping or charging on board.
- Spare refill bottles follow the liquids rule.
The short answer
You can usually fly within Europe with a disposable vape, but it must travel in your hand luggage or on your person, never in checked baggage, and you cannot use it on the plane. The reason is the lithium battery, not the nicotine.
Why it has to go in hand luggage
Aviation safety rules treat e-cigarettes as battery-powered devices. If a lithium battery overheats in the cabin, the crew can deal with it; in the hold, nobody can. That is why airlines across Europe ask passengers to keep vapes, power banks and spare batteries in the cabin.
- Keep the device switched off or protected from accidental activation.
- Carry it in a pocket or a small pouch, not loose at the bottom of a bag with keys or coins.
- Airlines may limit how many devices you carry; if you travel with several, check your airline’s page before you fly.
Can you vape on the plane?
No. Vaping is banned on board on European airlines, including in the toilets. Do not charge your vape on board either. Many airports also restrict vaping to designated smoking areas.
E-liquid and the 100 ml rule
A sealed disposable is usually treated as a device, not a liquid. Spare refill bottles for pod kits, however, count as liquids, so they must follow the airport’s liquids rule for hand luggage (typically containers of up to 100 ml in a clear bag, although some airports with new scanners are more relaxed). Check the rules at your departure airport.
At your destination
Rules on where you can vape, and on which products can be sold, differ between countries. A device you can buy at home may be restricted elsewhere, and outside the EU the differences can be much bigger. If you are travelling further afield, check the local rules before you pack.
Pre-flight checklist
- Vape in your hand luggage or pocket, never in a checked suitcase.
- Protect it from switching on (cap on, button lock if it has one).
- Refill liquids in the liquids bag.
- No vaping or charging on board.
- Check your airline and destination rules if you carry several devices.
