It is one of the questions people type into Google most often about disposables: “how many cigarettes is a 12,000-puff vape?” You will find confident answers anywhere from 50 to 1,000. They can’t all be right – and honestly, most of them aren’t very useful. Here is the maths, and a better way to think about it.
The short answer
- There is no reliable one-number answer. Nicotine content, how deeply you inhale and how your body absorbs it all vary.
- Counting puffs vs cigarettes is the weakest comparison, because a “puff” and a “drag” are not the same amount of anything.
- A more useful comparison is how long one device lasts you vs how many packs you used to get through in the same time.
Why puff-for-puff comparisons fall apart
The popular rule of thumb goes like this: a cigarette is about 10–15 drags, so 12,000 puffs ÷ 12 ≈ 1,000 cigarettes. It sounds neat. The problem is that a “puff” on the box is a short machine puff measured in a lab, while a drag on a cigarette is whatever you happen to take. They aren’t the same unit, so dividing one by the other gives a number that looks precise but means very little.
We explain how puff counts are actually measured in How many puffs do you really get?.
The nicotine maths (and its limits)
A slightly better approach is to compare nicotine. Take the Tornado 15K as an example, because its e-liquid volume is published:
So is a Tornado 15K “50 cigarettes” (500 ÷ 10) or “400 cigarettes” (500 ÷ 1.25)? That gap is exactly the point. How much nicotine reaches your bloodstream from vaping depends on the device, the liquid, how long and deep your drags are, and your own body. Research on this varies a lot. Any single number is a guess dressed up as a fact.
Our take
We are a shop, not a doctor, so we won’t tell you a device is “equal to” a certain number of cigarettes. What we can tell you is what is inside the device and how to compare honestly.
A more useful way to compare
Forget the conversion tables. Track your own use for a couple of weeks instead:
- Note the date you start a new device.
- Note the date it runs out (devices with a display, like the Digital Box 12K or Tornado 15K, make this easy).
- Compare that with how many packs you used to buy in the same period – and what they cost.
That gives you a real number that applies to you, plus a cost comparison that actually matters to your wallet.
If you are trying to cut down
- Keep the same flavour and lower the strength step by step – our 0% vs 2% nicotine guide has a simple plan.
- Models that come in both 0% and 2%, such as the Tornado 15K, make that easier.
- If you want to stop using nicotine altogether, a local stop-smoking service or your GP can help with a proper plan.

FAQ
Is a 12,000-puff vape equal to 1,000 cigarettes?
No – that figure comes from dividing machine puffs by cigarette drags, which are different units. It isn’t a meaningful comparison.
How much nicotine is in a 2% disposable?
2% means 20 mg per mL. Multiply by the e-liquid volume: a 25 mL device contains about 500 mg in total. How much you absorb is a different (and much harder) question.
Is vaping safer than smoking?
That is a question for health authorities and your doctor, not a shop. Vaping products are for adult smokers and vapers only, and nicotine is addictive.
🔞 For adults 18+ only. Nicotine is highly addictive. Not for non-smokers, pregnant or breastfeeding women. Puff counts are manufacturer ratings and depend on how you vape. Recycle used devices at an electronics (WEEE) or battery collection point – never in household waste.
