How Many Puffs Do You Really Get? What 12K, 25K and 150K Actually Mean

Puff numbers on the box have gone from a few hundred to 12,000, 25,000 and – on multi-flavour devices – 150,000 and beyond. It is the first number everyone looks at, and also the most misunderstood one. Let’s clear it up.

Key points
  • Puff counts are lab ratings made with short, identical machine puffs.
  • Real drags are longer, so expect fewer puffs than the box says – often noticeably fewer.
  • E-liquid volume (mL) is a better clue than the puff number when comparing devices.
  • Compare value with price per 1,000 puffs, then sanity-check against how you vape.

How puff counts are measured

Manufacturers use a puffing machine: it draws a short, identical puff – typically around a second or two – rests, and repeats until the device stops producing vapour. The total becomes the number printed on the box.

It is a fair way to compare devices from the same lab, but it doesn’t describe how people actually vape.

Why your number is different

  • Drag length. A relaxed 3–4 second pull can use as much liquid as two or three lab puffs.
  • Power or “boost” modes. More power vaporises more liquid per puff – more flavour, fewer puffs.
  • Charging habits. A rechargeable device left flat can stop working with liquid still inside. Keep it topped up.
  • Heat. A device left in a hot car or sunny windowsill thins the liquid and can leak.
  • Chain vaping. Rapid back-to-back drags don’t give the coil time to re-soak, which wastes liquid and burns the taste.

A realistic lifespan table

Assuming a real-world drag uses roughly 1.5–2× the liquid of a lab puff:

Rated puffsLight (~150/day)Average (~300/day)Heavy (~500/day)
12,0005–7 weeks3–4 weeks2–3 weeks
15,0007–9 weeks4–5 weeks2.5–3.5 weeks
25,00010+ weeks6–8 weeks4–5 weeks
150,000 (multi-flavour)shared across all flavours – see below
Watch out
Multi-flavour devices (2-in-1, 4-in-1, 8-in-1) split their rating across several tanks. A 150K multi-flavour device is not one flavour for 150,000 puffs – it is several flavours sharing that total.

Look at the millilitres

When a manufacturer publishes the e-liquid volume, it is a more useful number than the puff count, because it is a physical measurement. For example, the Tornado 15K holds 25 mL. Two devices with similar mL will last a similar time for the same person, whatever the box claims.

Is bigger always better?

  • Bigger is cheaper per puff – almost always.
  • But it is heavier, less pocket-friendly, and you will be on the same flavour for a long time.
  • If you like variety, a 12K–15K device such as the Digital Box 12K lets you rotate flavours more often.
  • If you want variety and size, a multi-flavour device like the MYDE 8-in-1 is the compromise.

FAQ

Is a higher puff count always better value?
Usually per puff, yes – but only if you enjoy the flavour long enough to finish it.
Why did my device stop before the puff count?
Most often a flat battery, a long drag style or heat. If it stopped suddenly with liquid left, see our troubleshooting guide.
Does the nicotine strength change the puff count?
Not directly. It changes how satisfying each puff is, which can change how often you reach for it.
🔞 For adults 18+ only. Nicotine is highly addictive. Not for non-smokers, pregnant or breastfeeding women. Puff counts are manufacturer ratings and depend on how you vape. Recycle used devices at an electronics (WEEE) or battery collection point – never in household waste.
